Fostering Coordination for More Coherent Migration Policies

“Migration governance has been restricted to the national environment, it does not include subregional, regional and global levels,” regrets Victor Genina, policy advisor for Red CLAMOR at the 14th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit.

“The experience on the ground tell us that many local governments have done a remarkable job in integrating and providing services and helping both the host community and the migrant community to be integrated,” Mr. Genina notes, before expanding on the need for accountability, a key point for Civil Society: “the issue is how we can make the national governments accountable in the design, the implementation and the evaluation of their migration policies.”

“There is a profound lack of political will on the part of states to address and to commit in order to respond to this. It is striking,” he added. “We need a real commitment on the side of the states to really address this.”

Mr. Genina was interviewed during the second day of the 14th GFMD Summit which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on 24 January 2024. #CSGFMD14 #CSRoadtoGeneva #GFMD14
