{"id":2328,"date":"2020-07-17T12:26:10","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T10:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gfmdcivilsociety.org\/staging\/9981\/?p=2328"},"modified":"2020-07-31T15:07:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T13:07:13","slug":"au-regional-consultations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gfmdcivilsociety.org\/staging\/9981\/au-regional-consultations\/","title":{"rendered":"First round of Regional Consultations \u2013 African civil society: \u201cIt\u2019s time to speed up the implementation of the different relevant migration instruments&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A year-long process focused&nbsp;on the regional level&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the GFMD United Arab Emirates Chair organised <strong>six GFMD Regional Consultations<\/strong>, focused on six thematic priorities: these regional meetings were designed<strong> to give more space to regional, national and local perspectives in the GFMD process<\/strong>. The outcomes of those discussions between Member States, civil society organisations, business and cities will inform the preparations for next year\u2019s Summit, to be held in the United Arab Emirates in January 2021, under the overarching theme of \u201cThe Future of Human Mobility: Innovative Partnerships for Sustainable Development\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the ongoing global COVID-19 health crisis, the Chair of the GFMD convened the Regional Consultations online. For each region, <strong>an opening and closing plenary session took place via video conference, as well as a thematic breakout call <\/strong>during which three of this year\u2019s six themes were presented and discussed between Member States and the three GFMD Mechanisms (civil society, business and mayors). The topics selected for the GFMD-AU consultations were as follows: \u201cthe impact of changing work practices on migrants and migration\u201d, \u201cequipping migrants with the right skills to ensure their employment\u201d, and \u201csafeguarding the protection of migrants\u201d. Civil society has taken an active part in this process since the beginning, by participating directly in the GFMD regional consultations, and also by consulting and preparing for them with a large number of civil society representatives from the region. The results of these <strong>preparatory consultations<\/strong> were brought into the GFMD regional consultations by a <strong>civil society rapporteur.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cCSOs engaged with governments and other stakeholders to scale up progressive policies and practices\u201d &#8211; the GFMD Regional Consultation with the African Union<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Regional Consultation of the series was co-organised with the African Union (AU). To give everyone the opportunity to participate and overcome language barriers, two parallel consultations took place for this region, one in French and the other one in English. During both sessions, the <strong>representative for civil society<\/strong> was <strong>Mamadou Go\u00efta, Executive Director of the Panafrican Network in Defense of Migrants Rights (PANiDMR).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his opening remarks, the civil society rapporteur, Mamadou Go\u00efta, summarised the main points and recommendations resulting from the civil society pre-consultations.
