\u201cI want to congratulate all\nof us today, civil society representatives, government officials, local\nauthorities, business leaders \u2014 all of us sitting together. I am hopeful, I\nbelieve that this meeting can be the start of a process to make the Global\nCompact for Migration work,\u201d said civil society Co-Chair Jos\u00e9 Dolores Suazo\nMej\u00eda, Don Lolo, at the closing ceremony of the 12th Global Forum on Migration\nand Development Summit in Quito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For civil society leaders is\nnot always easy to enter into conversation with governments, Don Lolo said. He\nemphasized that the importance of this Forum is precisely the possibility to\nsit at the same table with government representatives \u2014 as equals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also reminded GFMD\nparticipants that States adopted the Global Compact for Migration out of their\nown free will. That is why, he said, it is important to engage with them to\nmake the Compact a reality on the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe had very good\ndiscussions these days. We talked about issues that worry us very much: how to\nchange the narratives on migration, how to avoid re-victimization of migrants,\nhow not to criminalize migrants and those who assist them. These are all topics\nthat are very dear to us, and the time is always short, we could talk about\nthese issues for weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We need to remember, Don\nLolo urged, that migrants contribute to their societies, both in the countries\nof origin and in the countries of destination. To make sure that their rights\nare respected throughout the migration journey, civil society organizations need\nto make partnerships with all actors involved, local and national governments,\nbusinesses, and international organizations. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bringing the voice of civil\nsociety representatives present in the room and around the world, he concluded\nhis intervention with a strong plea: \u201cWe want no more separated families, no\nmore deaths in migration, no more violations of human rights!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
